A home renovation entails a lot of decision-making. At ICON Custom Builders, our design coordinators are here to help you make those decisions by incorporating timeless details and design trends for a beautiful transformation. Whether you're considering a kitchen remodel, living room renovation, or bathroom update – let’s explore our top 5 home renovation trends in 2024.
BOLD COLOR PALETTES
“Color is making a comeback,” shared our design coordinators Katherine and Melissa. At the High Point Furniture Market this spring, they noticed a lot of bold, rich jewel tones. Color palettes are shifting away from cooler whites and grays and towards warmer, earthier tones – such as deep blues, rich emeralds and vibrant oranges. This trend gives spaces more personality than a decade ago.
Every homeowner has a different comfort level when it comes to color. Many are optimistic but cautious about the commitment. Some may prefer a room drenched in their favorite sage green, while others may prefer subtle pops of color. Whatever your preference is, we encourage you to incorporate this colorful trend in some way.
In a kitchen remodel, consider painting your kitchen island a bold color or opt for more neutral cabinets and incorporate color through a colorful backsplash or accent furniture. Our design coordinators will explore all your options and help make informed decisions that complement your home’s character and reflect your personal style.
TEXTURED WALL FINISHES
Wall finishes are a great way to add personality to your space and character to your home. We encounter exposed brick often in the homes we work in. Sometimes we intentionally add into the design, and sometimes it’s unexpected – like an exposed brick fireplace we uncover during construction. Exposed brick as shown in this beautiful sunroom is a great way to add a rustic, industrial aesthetic to modern homes.
Wallpaper is one of our most popular wall treatments during a home remodel. There is so much variation in terms of color, material, and texture. The right wallpaper can really set the tone for your space – whether it be calm, adventurous or playful. We love this blue botanical motif in a primary bathroom.
Millwork, such as molding or trim, make a home feel custom and lived-in. These are a few of our recommended wall finishes, but there are many other ways to incorporate texture into your renovation. It’s no surprise why textured wall finishes are a top 2024 home remodeling trend.
MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACES
Creating purposeful spaces that have many different uses is another popular renovation trend. These spaces offer flexibility and adaptability, making them essential in modern homes. We see large, open floor plans more often in newer builds as opposed to older homes, but we can create a multi-functional space regardless of your home’s age or style.
Multi-functional spaces can be tricky, so having an interior designer’s eye is critical. So much thought and creativity go into the layout and design plan. Our team thrives on helping homeowners think through how the space functions for their family, and how it can be improved through a renovation.
We’re accustomed to creating spaces for families that function as a family room and a children’s play space, and sometimes even a dining area. When designing one large open space, it’s crucial that all the design elements – lighting, finishes, textures, fabrics, and color palette – feel cohesive. With our approach to home remodeling, our design coordinators ensure each and every detail is intentional and flows beautifully throughout the space.
SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
Who doesn’t love the convenience of smart home technology? It allows us to control lighting, thermostats, security systems, and even kitchen appliances with ease.
During a home remodeling project, consider appliances connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to make everyday tasks a breeze – simply turn on the oven or start the laundry on the way home from work. Implement a Nest thermostat to adjust the settings when away from home and save on utility bills.
This technology is more energy efficient and cost-effective in the long run, and it’s also aesthetically pleasing – blending into the design to create a clean, streamlined home renovation.
Integrating smart technology into a home renovation ultimately enhances your living experience by offering unparalleled convenience and efficiency. Whether tackling a kitchen remodel or a bathroom renovation – our team will guide you in selecting and installing the right smart appliances for your needs.
SEAMLESS INDOOR-OUTDOOR SPACES
Creating indoor-outdoor spaces is one of our most consistent remodeling project requests. Many companies are embracing remote work after the pandemic, and homeowners are craving additional space. Thanks to mild temperatures here in Winston-Salem, we can comfortably enjoy an all-season porch for about 80% of the year. Features like retractable screens, fireplaces, and outdoor kitchens make outdoor spaces enjoyable year-round.
Whenever we design an indoor-outdoor space, we ensure the new details feel like they were always a part of the house. Our specialty is making updates and improving function while staying true to the character of the home. “Aesthetically, there should be a true connection of space from the interior to the exterior,” shared our design expert Katherine.
