A Historic Home

These homeowners of a historic West End home partnered with ICON to transform the kitchen and primary bathroom while preserving the home’s original charm.

This house built in 1918 was designed by renowned local architect Willard Northup, and it is recognized as one of the most outstanding Colonial Revival dwellings in the West End neighborhood.

A Kitchen Transformation

True to the time period, the original kitchen lacked proper storage and prep space. There was no island. During the kitchen renovation, ICON transformed the small and dated kitchen into a larger, more functional space for their family of 5.

We accomplished this by adding a large island and extending cabinetry all the way to the ceiling to create more storage. Ultimately, this modern kitchen renovation came to be by reimagining the layout and creative problem solving.

For example, to create enough space to incorporate the island, a wall was removed between the kitchen and original butlers pantry. An existing closet transformed into a walk-in pantry with new countertops and ceiling-height cabinetry.

A window was closed off to allow for double wall ovens to go in its place. Designer Jen Cameron shared how she improved functionality and beauty while honoring the historical property. “The window is still seen from the outside,” she shared. “By painting the window panes white, it gives the illusion of a frosted glass window.”

A Modern Kitchen Design

Several features make this kitchen transformation stand out. Farrow and Ball wallpaper in a funky, modern print makes a bold statement. The kitchen island in a light oak grounds the space, while the green perimeter cabinets create a striking contrast. Quartz countertops and backsplash create a seamless look. Brass hardware warms the space.

The walk-in pantry is a dream for kids and adults alike. There is ample storage for snacks and baking essentials, and appliances such as the microwave, beverage fridge and KitchenAid mixer are easily accessible.

A Custom Coffee Bar

The custom coffee bar boasts antique mirrored glass doors and cremone bolt hardware. It is one of the homeowners’ favorite details in the renovated space.

“This cabinet can be seen from the adjacent dining room,” Jen noted. “It was important for us to make it look more like a piece of furniture.”

At ICON Custom Builders, we see the big picture as well as the smallest of details. We consider how you live in your home, how the spaces all connect to each other, and we ensure that the transformed space feels cohesive.

A renovation that honors a home’s original character and charm, as well as a family’s personal taste, is ICON’s specialty

A Reimagined Primary Bath

Imagine a dated and small bathroom with a single vanity and one tub-shower combo in a house built in 1918. That’s why these homeowners opted for a primary bathroom renovation with ICON Custom Builders.

With a clear vision of a more functional, modern bathroom, our team got to work thoughtfully designing the new space. First, we improved the layout.

To create a larger footprint in the bathroom, we closed off an existing hallway that led to a spare room (which functioned as a sleeping porch years prior). We transformed that area into a large walk-in closet, which can be accessed through the bathroom. This enhanced the primary suite and improved the flow throughout each space.

Next, we created a true wet room and installed two items on the homeowners’ wish list – a soaking tub and large shower. This bath and shower area is separated from the vanities and private water closet – perfectly situated behind frameless glass doors for a modern, spa-like look.

A Bathroom Transformation

Lastly, Jen selected cabinetry, countertops, fixtures, finishes, and more to bring the space to life. Several features make this primary bathroom renovation so unique and custom.

The picket-shaped marble floor gives a modern feel to this older home. Light mint cabinets provide a nice contrast to the all-white bathroom. Double vanities provide both symmetry and storage. Arched vanity mirrors keep the space feeling modern and fresh, while doubling as medicine cabinets to provide additional storage.

This new layout and design has improved the homeowners’ daily routines. Getting ready for the day and winding down for the night has never been easier.

Through this renovation project, ICON expanded the primary bathroom and kitchen, and modernized the look and feel of each space. When transformed spaces are both beautiful and functional, enjoyment will continue for many years to come.
