This multi-space renovation involved updates to the kitchen and surrounding areas, including a new mudroom. Through custom solutions and a new and improved layout, our team transformed these high-traffic areas into functional, enjoyable spaces for this family of seven.
At the top of the homeowner’s wishlist was the desire to open up the space. To begin this project, we removed the wall between the living room and the kitchen. We also opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining room. This allows family members to technically be in separate rooms but feel like they’re all together in the same space.
Interior designer Melissa Hayes shared: “this opened up the spaces so they could communicate with one another.” This strategy ensured that there would be enough open space so that this busy family could gather together and enjoy all the beautiful details.
The giant kitchen island with 5 stools guarantees every child their own spot to sit and complete homework or enjoy an after-school snack. The quartz countertops are both durable and low-maintenance. The blue backsplash in a picket fence vertical bevel shape adds a pop of color and provides a contrast to the bright white cabinets.
These design selections elevate the aesthetic of the space, while the following solutions improve the kitchen’s functionality in several ways.
The combination microwave and convection oven takes up less space and is more efficient. The extra buffet space next to the fridge is practical, providing a convenient surface to set something down (since it’s far from the sink and prep area).
Additional storage was essential to this kitchen renovation’s success. The cabinet design featured silverware inserts, spice drawer inserts, and vertical dividers to store entertaining platters and trays. Don Guilbault – our master craftsman – even built a custom pantry to store food and kitchen appliances.
We maintained the double windows above the sink, allowing natural light to pour in while featuring beautiful views of the pool and backyard.
By eliminating the original bay window, we were able to create a mudroom drop zone space adjacent to the kitchen. Now each of the kids has a dedicated place for bookbags and shoes.
The slate blue color scheme flows from the kitchen into this mudroom space, making the design feel intentional and custom.
Lastly, our team added new hardwood flooring to the family room, kitchen, and dining room to match the existing flooring from the first-floor hallway and the second floor. This ensured consistent hardwoods throughout, making the spaces flow together well and feel cohesive.
This remodeled kitchen exudes character and charm. With an improved flow and a more functional design, this modern kitchen and mudroom will elevate daily life for this busy Winston-Salem family.
