This primary bathroom renovation involved a classic Buena Vista home in need of an update. The homeowners were expecting a new baby, and among their list of home projects to tackle, their first priority was a primary bathroom remodel.
The floor plan had not been changed since the home was built in 1940, and the tricky layout had sloped ceilings and two separate entrances. Our project manager and interior designer realized we could not expand the floor plan based on the bathroom’s location within the primary suite, so we had to maximize the space we had.
Keeping the shower in the same location, we reimagined the layout by moving the toilet behind the shower for privacy. We also closed up the second entrance to the bathroom in order to have a long wall where we could incorporate a double vanity and tall storage tower. With no room for a linen closet, this extra storage was key.
These homeowners fully trusted our process and asked our interior designer Katherine Yeager to pitch a design concept and make all the selections. They loved what she came up with and signed off on her plan with zero changes – which rarely happens. They were thrilled with her design vision, cohesive plan for the space, and the beautiful outcome.
Katherine was very intentional about her design selections – she wanted to celebrate the home’s original character by incorporating traditional elements, but in a fun, fresh way. For example, she opted for classic marble basketweave shower floor tile, a nod to the traditional Buena Vista neighborhood.
Large format floor tile elongates the space. Natural quartzite countertops offer family-friendly durability and beautiful movement throughout. In the shower area, the skylight illuminates the soft blue subway tile that reflects beautifully in the vanity mirrors.
Mixed metals are another unique design feature. The gold mirrors, light fixtures and hardware pair nicely with polished nickel plumbing fixtures due to the nickel’s gold undertones.
Katherine’s favorite project detail is the warm wood vanity. “Warm tones are coming back in and I don’t see them going anywhere,” she added. This vanity creates a beautiful statement wall – accentuated by the textured grasscloth wallpaper behind it – that makes a big impact in a smaller space. Thoughtful design selections like these make the room feel as spacious as possible.
We were honored that this young family partnered with us to modernize their primary bathroom in their traditional Buena Vista home. The end result is a functional and beautiful design that reflects the style of the neighborhood and the new homeowners.
