ICON Custom Builders is celebrating twenty years of remodeling homes in Winston-Salem this year!
From small-scale projects to multi-space renovations, and from home additions to new home construction, our full-service design-build team has completed a variety of home transformations since 2005.
Our recipe for success? A combination of a diversely-skilled team, trusted trade partners, and homeowners who have collaborated with us to accomplish their dream home improvement projects.
When it comes to the design process, our interior designers Katherine Yeager and Melissa Hayes follow one guiding principle above all – blending beauty and function.

The foundation of a successful renovation is understanding our clients, and asking key questions early on in the process. How do you use the space? How does the existing space function? What could be improved? What details and features are on your wishlist?
For a kitchen renovation project, consider a client who has a large eat-in kitchen with an open floor plan and ample storage, yet rarely cooks. Alternatively, consider a client who has a tight galley-style kitchen with young children, who uses the space all the time. It is our job to create a beautiful, functional space for each situation and meet each family’s needs.

When creating a new design plan, we make sure it aligns with how our clients envision themselves using the space. Would they benefit from an updated layout? Is additional storage needed? How can we maximize the space, or do we need to expand?
Sometimes the solution is a reconfigured layout, and a more intentional placement of appliances, cabinets and windows. Sometimes it is just updating fixtures, finishes and paint – cosmetic touch-ups that make an impact. Regardless of the project scope, functionality is key.
If something doesn’t function well, it doesn’t matter how pretty it is,” shared one of our designers Katherine Yeager.
Consider the lighting plan, for example. If this is not done well, then you will not be able to see the transformation. All of the other design details will fade to the background. Perhaps you want to incorporate a beautiful diffused light fixture – you will still need to add other lights to fully illuminate the space, especially in a bathroom renovation.

“Sconce lighting is like jewelry,” Katherine said. “You need a can light above the vanity to put your makeup on.”
After troubleshooting the space’s functionality, we shift our focus to how the space will look. Design details such as cabinetry style, millwork, paint color, light fixtures, and hardware ensure the end result is aesthetically pleasing. Our design team then guides homeowners through making these key design selections.
Select quartz countertops that are low maintenance and family friendly. Opt for performance fabrics in homes with young children or pets. Install appliance garages for convenient access to cooking essentials while blending into the design. Select lighting that will make the space feel finished, warm, and unique.

Partnering with a general contractor and interior designer early in the process will ensure you are thinking about the right things, and approaching the renovation in a comprehensive way.
