We were delighted to make this Winston-Salem couple’s primary suite more functional for their daily routine. With our well-rounded approach to home remodeling, we carefully assessed each of the connected spaces and how the flow could be improved. 

“To maximize the efficiency of this space, the big game changer was shifting the entrance to the primary bathroom door,” shared designer Melissa Hayes. By creating one long hallway, we were able to accommodate two closets instead of just one. This gives each spouse dedicated clothing storage, and improves the flow between the bedroom, bathroom, and closets. 

Next we focused on the primary bathroom design – reimagining the floor plan and adding intentional details to truly transform the space. 

We removed the existing soaking tub that the homeowners never used and instead created a much more functional shower. We moved the toilet location from one side to the other, upgraded to a tankless bidet, and created a private water closet. 

“The vanity was originally much lower to the ground, so we added height and a design that maximizes both storage and efficiency,” said Melissa. We doubled the vanity’s storage space since we had to remove the existing linen closet to accommodate all these changes.

Once the new layout and key elements were in place, Melissa worked with the homeowners to make design selections that combined functionality and comfort.

Fantasy brown marble countertops pair beautifully with the dark-stained wood cabinets and vibrant brass hardware. Double sinks make sharing the space a breeze. 

Roll-out medicine cabinets provide convenience while full-height cabinetry maximizes storage. Hidden outlets hide hair tools, and clothes hampers remain tucked away, helping the space feel calm and clutter-free.  

With this primary bathroom remodel, Melissa incorporated a lot of “creature comforts” into the design plan, and optimized the space for two busy people getting ready together each day. 

Heated towel warmers and heated floors add a feeling of luxury. The oversized shower includes a large bench, and a spa-like pebble floor perfectly compliments the large-scale textured format shower walls. 

To fully modernize this primary bathroom space, we even incorporated smart technology. “The Bluetooth-ready vent fan makes every morning more enjoyable,” shared Melissa. “They can get ready with their favorite newscast or music playing.” 

Other smart features include a vanity mirror that can change the tone and color. A tankless bidet adds “even more creature comfort.” 

Not only is the remodeled bathroom space beautiful and functional, but it’s also practical. We were mindful to install design solutions that are easy to maintain.

Pull-out faucets make it easier to clean around each sink. Heated tile floors that extend into the shower area control moisture and prevent mold from growing. The shower ledges create clean lines and eliminate any nooks and crannies that can trap dirt and bacteria.

This transformation extended beyond the primary bathroom and the primary closets. We also accommodated the homeowners’ request to improve the existing HVAC system so it could be controlled from the bedroom. 

“Our clients were not happy with how the HVAC system previously flowed into their bedroom space, so we came up with the solution of doing a mini split,” said Melissa. “Finding the right location to place that was somewhat of a challenge, but it was worked out, and now our clients are happy with their personal control over the temperature in the bedroom.”
